UNIVERSITY IMPROVES

Drawn Game With Carlton The thirteenth round of senior grade matches in the Canterbury Women's Hockey Association s competitions was held on Saturday morning because of the representative fixture in the afternoon Results were:— Harewood 6, Teachers’ College 3. University 1, Carlton 1. Christchurch West 3, Rawhiti I. nigbys 3, Aranui 2. Competition points to date are: Harewood 24, University 16, Christchurch West 16. Digbys 14, Carlton 12. Aranui 11, Rawhiti 9, Teachers College 2. Harewood v. Teachers’ College

The bottom team in the competition provided stiff opposition to the ohampionship winners and led at half-time, but could not cope with a determined rally in the later stages. Prominent for the losers were J. Lynch in goal, B. Larkin at left back, M. Newbury and S Woods in the halves, and J. Thomson and R. Saunders, who played her best game of the season, in the forwards. For Harewood, Y. Turner showed something of her best form because of more accurate passing, wffiile H. Turner and G Merrin were mainly responsible for the second half recovery. M Devine and B. Turner gave them sound support. University v. Carlton

Playing with much greater determination and dash than in recent weeks, University was rather unlucky in not winning this drawn game. There were occasions when Carlton appeared to have three or four defenders in the goalmouth all enjoying the rights and privileges of a goalkeeper. For University T. Minehan led her forwards well and received good support from F Kelly and K. McKerrow, while A Gainsford, S Comer, and D. Row-ley-Smith comprised an enterprising half line. G. Falloon and M. Webb defended well for Carlton, and the main thrust in the forward line was provided by J. Davidson, H. Jones, and A. Karini. Christchurch West v. Rawhiti

The West inside forward trio, M. Thomson, J. Fifield. and M. Donaldson, possessed too much penetration and combination for the Rawhiti defence, and they were well supported by N. Powell in the halves and J. Hall at right back. L. Todd and A. Schimanski were the best of the Rawhiti forwards, and N. Lennie was a stubborn and constructive defender. L. Bayliss also made a number of very good saves in goal. Digbys v. Aranui The Digbys forwards were in good form in a fast, open game, and they were particularly well led by T Touhou and A. Fleming. A Power gave them good service from the half line, and a capable defence was presented by B Makinson, A. Vinkhuisen. and R. Turner. The Aranui defence relied greatly upon G Hall R. Farrant. A Fleete. and T. Prestage, and it was encouraging to note more attempts at combined play in the forward line, where S i McCaw. G. Mayer, and M. Cawood | were prominent. Results of other representative i matches:— Canterbury B 6, Ashburton B 1. ! Canterbury Primary Schools 8.: Ashburton Primary Schools 1. Shirley third-grade team 2, Ash-1 burton third grade 2.
