HIRE PURCHASE IN AUSTRALIA
£3som Now Owed To Companies (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, July 31. Australians' indebtedness to hire-purchase companies exceeds £3som and is still rising. The figure stood at £347.5m al April 30, according to the Commonwealth Statistician (Mr S. R Carver). It was £34om on January 31 and about £3oom on July 31 last. The number of new hirepurchase agreements for household goods increased by 900 to 65.032 during April, after a decline in each month since November. The total number of new agreements during April was 102,029 for goods valued at £34m, of which £22m was financed by hire-purchase companies.
