Lawn Tennis AUSTRALIA LEADS CUBA, 3-0
American Zone Final Of Davis Cup (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MONTREAL. August 1. Australia will play the final two singles of the American zone final of the Davis Cup against Cuba tomorrow already assured of its place against Italy in the first inter-zone final at Philadelphia next weekend. Australia gained a winning 3-0 lead over Cuba today when the Queenslanders, Rod Laver and Roy Emerson, beat the Garrido brothers. 8-6, 6-4, 6-4, in a dismal doubles match. Australia’s team captain, Harry Hopman, announced immediately after the doubles that he intended substituting the Victorian Bob Mark for Emerson in the first of tomorrow’s two singles, against Orlando Garrido Ncaie Fraser will play the second singles, against Reynaldo Garriuo. Yesterday Emerson gave an impressive display in beating Reynaldo Garrido, 6-0, 6-4, 6-4, in 60 minutes, winning the first 10 games of the match at breakneck speed in the humid Montreal heat-wave. Fraser then beat Orlando Garrido, 6-1, 7-5, 6-3, in 72 minutes, but in a far less convincing fashion than that shown by Emerson. Fraser did, however, treat the sparse crowd of about 300 to a fine demonstration of service power. He lost only four points in five service games in the final set, and never once dropped service in 14 service games in the match—though he had to fight back from love-40 to win the fifth game of the second set.
