SOUTHLAND BEATS MID-CANTERBURY

Unimpressive 28-13 Victory

(From Our Own Reporter)

INVERCARGILL,. August 2. j Although the Southland Rugby team scored its third win this season by beating Mid-Canter-bury by 28 points to 13 at Rugby Park on Saturday, the win was their most unimpressive. MidCanterbury, one of the weakest teams to have been seen in Invercargill for some time, was able to score three tries against Southland’s seven, but at times the visiting team had the home team completely baffled. Mid-Canterbury was unable to get in Southland territory more than a dozen- times and it was to their credit that they scored three tries.

For Mid-Canterbury D. H Cameron scored two tries and E. Flaherty one. A. H. Smith converted both. For Southland R. Todd (2), J. Allison (2), R. O. Jackman, A. Soper and L. K. Fyall scored and D. L. Ashby kicked a penalty goal and two conversions.

Mid-Canterbury were able to keep scoring down on occasions because of of their wing-three-quarters, A. Olliver and D. H. Cameron. These men caught the Southland wingers several times, Olliver .taking Allison from behind on two occasions when he looked certain to score. Cameron’s two tries were the result of his speed. The Mid-Canterbury full-back A. H. Smith, whose Ifrie kicking was not lengthy, but accurate, saved his team several times. The forwards for Mid-Canter-bury were a vigorous lot, not good enough in the tight to win the major share of the ball, but enterprising in the loose and able in the second-half to break through the Southland lineout. There were two or three foot rushes by Mid-Canterbury that Southland could not match. MidCanterbury were unlucky to lose their hooker, R. T. Dawson, early in the game. He was replaced by L. Bell. Southland were unable to win a tight head. The teams were:—

Mid-Canterbury: A. H. Smith, A. Olliver, E. M. Fahey, D. H. Cameron, S. W. Goodwin, A. A. Fraser, T. Jwalor, F. Sugre, N. G. Cornelius. N. Goodwin, R. T. Dawson, P. Prendergast. L. Bell replaced Dawson in the first spell. Southland: D. L. Ashby, R. Wood, K. F. Laidlaw, J. G. Allison, W. J. Archer, W. R. Archer. A. J. Tait, A. J. Soper, E. AL Gorton, I. M. Miller, D. Jack, L. K. Fyall, H. W. O’Neill, J. S Borland, R. O. Jackman. The referee was Mr J. D. Gillespie.
