LICENCES FOR RESTAURANTS

Recommendation By Commission Alteration of the law so that liquor can be served with meals in approved restaurants is recommended in the annual report of the Licensing Control Commission. The commission also recommends the alteration of trading hours for licensed premises and extension of the hours during which liquor may be served with meals in licensedhotels. j These three recommendations were also made, with 19 others, in the commission’s report last year.

The commission says that experience over the last year makes it increasingly important that the law be amended to enable licensing authorities to obtain more information regarding applicants for publicans’ licences and that steps be taken to establish classes or a trading centre for those who want to enter the hotel business. The need for improved qualifications for publicans and for better service in the control and conduct of their licences is emphasised. The commission continues to press for an amendment to the law regarding polls on the granting of new licences. At present an adverse poll permanently prevents a new licence being granted within the area in whi"h the poll is taken. The commission recommends that such polls be conclusive for only two years.
