UNREST IN AFRICA

Treason Trials To Resume (Rec. 10.36 p.m.) PORT ELIZABETH (Cape Province), August 1. Police stood by with three Saracen armoured cars as more than 100 African families sought refuge in the bush outside Port Elizabeth last night after the murder of four Africans early yesterday. The atmosphere in African townships was electric and people feared a recurrence of the violence, believed to be the result of a feud after a split in the African National Congress over defence funds for the South African treason trial. The four Africans were killed at Kwazakele when 100 Africans from the nearby township of New Brighton attacked a group of families who had recently moved from New Brighton. Some of the families recently broke away from the congress after dissatisfaction over administration of the funds. The treason trial is to resume on August 3. Thirty persons are appearing on charges of high treason, and fresh indictments are being prepared against another 60.
