SCIENCE DEGREE PROPOSAL
Wellington Move To Attract Teachers
iNew Zealand Press Association > WELLINGTON, July 27. In an effort to overcome the shortage of science teachers, the council of the Victoria University of Wellington today approved a new type of bachelor of science degree and a new type of honours course.
The proposed degree would be an alternative to the present one, and would consist of nine units instead of the present eight. A stage 111 unit would not be compulsory Instead, students could take three stage II units and up to three arts units.
Students taking this degree, called the type B, would not be able to take an honours course, though they could convert the degree to type A (similar to the present B.Sc.) and proceed to honours.
The scheme will probably operate from next year, subject to approval by the curriculum committee of the University of New Zealand.
