Queen Visits Mine
(N.Z Press Association —Copyright) SUDBURY( Ontario), July 26. The Queen donned an oversized miner's helmet and blue nylon raincoat yesterday and went 1000 feet underground to see how nickel is mined. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were shown around the white-painted workings of the main Froud mine. The mine is operated by the International Nckel Company of Canada, in the northern Ontario community of Sudbury. The' Queen carried a flashlight and the Duke wore a standard miner’s lamp during the underground trip. They spent 27 minutes underground, asking questions about how the mine operated. An estimated 50,000 persons turned out in Sudbury itself and on the 15-mile route to the airport to see the Royal couple, who flew here from Winnipeg aboard an R.C.A.F. Comet jet transport. They later flew to Port Hope. Ontario, to spend three days of rest at the residence of the Governor-General (Mr Vincent Massey). The Queen, who suffered an illness which forced her to curtail her touring a week ago, looked weary when she reached Port Pope, the Canadian Press reported.
