Cameroons Unrest

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyngnt) YAOUNDE (French Cameroons), July 26. Five persons were killed in attacks at Bansoa, in the Bamileke region of the Cameroons last Monday night, according to reports received last night. Four of the victims were clubbed and hacked to death with matchetes and the fifth was burned alive, the reports said. Other inhabitants of the village escaped the attackers who also set fire to some huts. These deaths bring to 31 the number of people killed in the Bamileke region in the last three weeks. Fifteen persons were injured in the same period. Attacks against peasants to prevent them from supplying foodstuffs to the bigger towns, especially to Douala, have increased since last May. The Cameroons Government of Mr Ahmadou Ahidjo has made no announcement about the source of the attacks, but French observers in the Cameroons blame the Cameroons Peoples' Union, some of whose members took to the jungle when the party was outlawed four years ago, to fight for immediate independence and union with the British Cameroons.

The French Cameroons is due by decision of the United Nations to become fully independent in January. 1960.
