Paintings Bought For Art Gallery
At its meeting last week the City Council decided to buy "The Washerwomen,” a painting by Douglas Mac Diarmid, for the McDougall Art Gallery. The council also bought “Night Race to Kawau” by Helen Brown and three watercolours by the late M. O. Stoddart.
. It was also decided to accept from the New Zealand Pioneers’ Descendants’ Club the gift of a
miniature by Mrs Elsie M. White. The offer of a painting of Sumner in 1878 by John Gibb from a Dunedin resident was also accepted. The winning painting in the 1958 Kelliher Prize competition, by Leonard Mitchell, of Wellington, will be shown at the gallery from January 13 to February 27, 1960.
