ROAD COURTESY CAMPAIGN
Official Opening By Mayor
The road courtesy crusade was an endeavour to bring the message of safety home to every section of the community, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) said yesterday in a message to all road users when he launched the crusade in Christchurch.
"It is. in fact, a very real effort to obtain greater courtesy from everyone using our roads,’’ he said. “From figures published. Christchurch, as at the end of the financial year, did have a rather appalling accident record, a large number of those persons involved being pedestrians and cyclists, and unfortunately, we have had some fatal accidents in our city This loss of life, coupled with the numerous accidents, entails a great amount of human suffering in our community.
“We are all under a great obligation to reduce this unnecessary pain and anguish experienced by our fellow citizens.’’ said Mi Manning. “Therefore this crusade is aimed at obtaining greater cooperation between all sections of the road users, and if that cooperation and courtesy can only be applied by all road users, then surely our accident rate must decrease.
"It is my wish that every citizen of Christchurch will co-oper-ate to the utmost, and extend the courtesy that should be extended to one another as fellow citizens, and thus cause our unenviable accident record to diminish considerably. “It is my pleasure to declare this road courtesy crusade duly open with the hope that it proves an outstanding success and that it will be a worthy example to follow for the rest of the country.’’
Mr Manning then wished good luck to the campaign organisers.
