MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
Fatal Injuries At Party (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. July 27. A charge of manslaughter was preferred against John Albert Mains, aged 22. painter, when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Dunedin this morning before Mr J. D. Willis, S.M. Mains was charged with causing the death of Frederick Pickford. aged 29. at Mosgiel yesterday. He was remanded until next Monday. Bail was allowed at £250 with a surety of £250. Mr R. J. Gilbert. for Mains, said in requesting bail that Mains was a married man with a baby only a few months old. There was considerable doubt at the present stage as to the actual cause of death. Mains had never previously been in trouble. The incident arose out of an unfortunate set of circumstances. Detective-Sergeant A. E. Leadley said he had no objection to bail. An inquest into the death of Pickford was opened before the District Coroner, Mr Willis, and adjourned sine die after evidence of identification was given by a brother-in-law, Tahu Potiki Hiko. a bulldozer driver.
