NORTH ISLAND BEATEN, 6-2

Skilful Exhibition By Australians (New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 26. The northern section of the touring Australian badminton team tightened its grip on the Whyte Trophy by beating a strong North Island team 6-2 in a skilful exhibition on Saturday night. The visitors had a clean sweep in the men's, women's and mixed doubles, and generally showed more purpose and a keener understanding in this phase of. the game. An audience of nearly 900 watched Mrs H. Robson and Miss S. Cox give North Island an early lead by sweeping through their opponents. Mrs J. Bevan and Mrs A. Pincott, respectively. for straight-set wins. The Australian girls had their revenge in the doubles, frequently catching Mrs Robson and Miss Cox flat-footed with deceptively angled drops. The 21-year-old New South Wales player, G. Robotham, did not take long to dispose of A. Stephens, but K. C. Turner had a harder job with New Zealand’s No. 1 player, J. E. Robson. Robson and Stephens were easily the most impressive of North Island's doubles combinations. Results:—

Mrs J. Bevan lost to Mrs J. Robson. 9-12, 8-11; G. Robotham beat A. Stephens, 15-3, 15-4; Mrs A. Pincott lost to Miss S. Cox. 0-11, 2-11; K. C. Turner beat J. E. Robson, 13-15, 15-3, 17-16; G. Cox, 15-10, 15-9; Turner and Robotham beat Robson and Stephens. 13-17. 15-9, 15-10.
