The Budget

Sir,— The critics of the present Budget can be divided into three classes. Those who expect the Labour Party to tie Father Christmas all the year round now are disgruntled because they cannot get all the toys they wanted. Father Christmas hasn't enough money overseas to buy all the toys they want. So what? Then there are the grumblers who think that a 20 per cent* reduction is illusory and they are not getting enough out of it. Did they say the 25 per cent, rebate was illusory? Then there are the critics continually carping about Labour increasing taxation. How much did they carp in 1954 when the National Party increased the rate of income tax by 20 per cent to 3s in the £. Evidently increases in taxation and rebates are good only when done by the National Party.—Yours, etc., A.F.P. July 15, 1959.
