Captain E. Lawrey To Be Commodore The master of the Port Sydney, which will come to New Zealand from Australia next month to load for the United Kingdom, has been appointed commodore of the Port Line fleet. He is Captain E. T. N. Lawrey, who has been in command of the Port Sydney since 1955. Captain Lawrey succeeds Captain F. W. Bailey, who was appointed commodore on June 30 last year, and who has now retired. Captain Lawrey began his sea career in January, 1913, when he was apprenticed to W. J. Tatem and Company of Cardiff. While serving with the company his ship was twice sunk by enemy action in 1916. That same year he obtained his second mate’s certificate and joined the Commonwealth and Dominion Line,'whose nartie was later changed to Port Line, and in 1918. for the third time in World War I, was in a vessel which was sunk by enemy action. He has been in the company’s employ continuously for 43 years and was appointed master in 1939.
