ln The “600 Block” ei— ■. A- ■ , ■■■' "' ' .' r ■ _z4 ;ja ■ I ■ £>■ ■ '’ s rarl ■ 4- t Hkl Ob a' » : T a. '••■"*•-a s SOK- • ••** The “600 Block” is the name businessmen in Colombo street have given the area between Tuam and St. Asaph streets. It is the section where the last of the premises numbered among the 500's become the 600’s. Although people know individual shops, stores and businesses in the “600 Block” well, it is doubtful if many are aware of the great variety of commerce done in that short distance. You could do practically all your every-day shopping there—and several sorts of specialised buying as well. Most of them are long-established businesses in the “600 Block” but there are also one or two newer shops. In all, there are 28 business firms between Tuam street and St. Asaph street, and one of them is offering its premises for sale. From Tuam street on the eastern side there are C. J. Williamson, Ltd. (pram specialists), Hanafin’s pharmacy, Whitmore’s furniture shop, Capes’s fruit store, Falconer’s shoe store, the City Book Exchange, Downings’ shoe store, R. G. McKenzie (tailors), O. Von Sierakowski, Ltd. (wire-workers), Tonks Norton (auctioneers), C. E. Jones (valuers and estate agents), Mrs Harbott’s used clothing shop, and the Prince of Wales Hotel. On the western side from Tuam street there are Wadsworths (tailors), Butler’s cycle shop and Cull and Prosser, Ltd. (plumbers’ merchants) before the block is interrupted by Mollett street. From Mollett street there are R. S. Paterson’s boot repair shop, J. Colligan’s hairdressing and tobacconist’s shop, Bowman’s motor supplies, the Golden Cafe, A. J. Pickering and Son (engineers’ supplies), the Phit-U tailors, W. Ruddiman (jewellers), a shop for sale, the “Duchess” milk bar, C. L. Shields (dental repairs), Jack Tracy (tailor), and A. Nevell’s bedding warehouse.
