ACCIDENTS WITH TRACTORS
High Rate Among Children The alarmingly high rate of tractor accidents among children has been discussed at the annual conferences of at least two organisations recently—the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers and the Country Women’s Institutes. Health Department records quoted in a recent bulletin. “Health,” show the real need for this concern. There is an average of more than 30 children a year who go to New Zealand hospitals suffering from tractor injuries. This figure includes children under the age of 14 and excludes children who were killed instantly. During the last nine years 22 children have died in tractor accidents.
These figures do not tell the whole story of the dangers of mechanised farming In 1955. 21 children were injured in farm accidents involving other machines besides tractors, the bulletin says.
