BOYCOTT OF MEALS
76 Boys Caned iFrom a Reuter Correspondent) DURBAN. Seventy-six boys at a hostel of the Durban High School were caned after an objection to scrambled eggs. The boys, dissatisfied with their breakfast, marched out of the school grounds and intended ‘o spend the day on the beach. Senior boys said that their action was a protest against the monotony of the food given to them, but the housemaster said he understood that the reason for their breaking school rules was because one of the senior boys had been punished for telling juniors not to eat their breakfast The boys left the school grounds just before assembly, after one of them had suggested that they boycott their studies. They decided to return. however, before going far. Immediately they returned they were dealt with The housemaster said that he was considering “gating" them for their long week-end. but decided that caning would be less harsh. The 76 were accordingly whipped, moving one by one to the punishment chamber. Third formers received three cuts and more senior boys four.
