TRADE WITH WEST
East “Uneasy” , About Terms (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) ~ GENEVA, July 18. East European nations want more trade with the West but are uneasy about the terms on which the West would agree to trade expansion, according to a survey published today. In its report on economic development in Europe in the first quarter of 1959, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe said the Communist bloc countries needed as a basis for their foreign trade plans a fairly long-term undertaking that their access to Western markets would not be suddenly disturbed by new traiff or quota obstacles. Last year, East Europe consolidated the increased yolume of trade it had with the West, the report added. “West European statistics indicate a not insignificant rise in the value of trade in both directions, though there was a noticeable decline in trade between 'Western Europe and the Soviet Union,” it was stated.
