Company Newt EXPANSION BY GILLMAN
Predicted Shortage Of Cardboard “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. July 17. The growing turnover of Gillman Packaging, Ltd., had made the provision of extra space a matter of urgency, said the chairman of the company, Mr F. A. Gillman, at the annual meeting yesterday. In view of the need for further manufacturing and storage space, work had now begun on an additional building of 26,000 square feet, costing about £50.000. It is expected to be completed in February, 1960. Supplies of materials had been adequate, said Mr Gillman, but there were indications that conditions might become more difficult in the near future, owing to the increasing demand outstripping production of locally made cardboards.
Referring to the factory fire last April, Mr Gillman said the company’s engineers had removed one machine from the premises even before the fire had been completely extinguished and had it going in a matter of days. Staff was employed on the day of the fire, mostly at improvised benches in the cafeteria. Other cardboard box and printing businesses had assisted in supplying machines without which production could not have resumed for months. Import licences for replacement were granted as a matter of course. I About the future, Mr Gillman said expansion was apparent and close contact was maintained with overseas companies. From this source a constant flow of information was also received. Australian Assembled Peugeots.— Automotive® and Genera] Industries. Ltd., will assemble Peugeot vehicles at the Moorabbjn, Victoria, plant of the subsidary. C. and G. (Wholesale) Pty., Ltd. The company recently obtained the Peugeot franchise for Australia, which virtually replaces the Simca franchise, now controlled by Chrysler. i
