RACING JESSE OWENS BEST OF TIMARU MILERS

Jesse Owens again showed his possibilities as a Winter Cap contender ‘by winning the Claremont Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s annual meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. This was Jesse Owens’s third win in four starts for his Waimate owner-trainer, Mr P. H. R. Andrews. His only-rival of any worth on Saturday was Tadpole, which attempted an all-the-way win. Tadpole, a surprise win favourite, went under by half a length in the face of a well-sustained challenge from the Waimate horse.

Jesse Owens won on Saturday with 9-0. He will drop to 7-12 in the Winter Cup, a race with a 71b lower scale, and must be generally regarded now as one of the strongest contenders from the lower half of the handicap. Jesse Owens had a dozen runners ahead of him after two furlongs of the Claremont Handicap and there were still at least nine ahead of him going to the half-mile. Tadpole and Gaytana put a break on the others on the home turn, and the former left Jesse Owens with a long chase. But a furlong out Jesse Owens quickly reduced the Southland galloper’s lead. At the end Jesse Owens had half a length to spare. The best behind Tadpole was Uord Fane, a strong finisher. He was at long odds, though he had won at Waimate a week earlier. The Oamaru-trained Blue Haven rounded off (he day’s double with a stylish win in the Pentlow Hack Handicap. Holders of 176 5s tickets on the Jesse Owens-Blue Haven combination received £504 18s foj £l. Blue Haven, the 11/14 fawurite, is a three-year-old KurdistanRosehaven filly owned by Mr E. McKenzie and trained by J. C. Hobbs. When trained in Southland earlier in the season she won the Trial Stakes at the Cromwell annual meeting. Saturday’s racing was held in fine weather on a track that was jutting out slightly. There was a moderate attendance. The on-course totalisator turnover was £24.067 10s, including £3996 10s in doubles, compared with £31,707 last year. Strong Finish Tadpole ran into the lead quickly in the Claremont Handicap and made a very determined effort to lead to the end. He was mastered close to home by Jesse Owens, a very strong finisher from well back. Ration Time drifted quickly at the start and Lightning Boy and Hannibal were also slow to move. Tadpole was followed to the six furlongs by Gaytana. King Cassock. Waterfall. Pink Rose. Red Tinge, Bobwood. Spiloch. Appreciate. Kinsimm. Hannlball. Cashmere, Demolish, Jesse Owens, and Marsana. Gaytana was at Tadpole's girth at the half-mile, and King Cassock and Waterfall led the others Tadpole and Gaytana widened their lead coming to the home turn. Most of the others tired of their chase after the leaders, but not Jesse Owens. He came strongly in the middle of the track. Gaytana had had -lehough going Ao the turlong~and after that it was a two-way battle Tadpole rallied

determinedly when J. M. Cappie went for his whip, but Jesse Owens had the stronger finish, and it gave him quite a handy win. Lora Fane, well back until close to home, outfinished the others, and was third two and a half lengths behind Tadpole. Then there was a length and a half to Kinsimm, which shaded Ration Time and Hannibal. Kinsimm could not find racing room on the irtside when they came to the straight, but ran the last two furlongs strongly when brought wider out.

Hannibal was followed in by Bobwood, Column, Marsana, Spiloch, Cashmere. Appreciate, Demolish, Waterfall, Pink Rose, Gaytana, King Cassock, Lightning Boy, and Red Tinge. Second Leg

Blue Haven ran clear outside the furlong in the Pentlow Handicap and won at her leisure by four iengths from the consistent Sir Edwin. Blue Haven followed Keith s Luck. Brian Warwick. Underbid. Archway, and Sir Edwin past the half-mile. She was alongside Brian Warwick and Archway in the lead on the home turn, but put them behind her in a few strides. It was all over at the furlong. Sir Edwin, fourth into the last furlong. passed Archway and Underbid to get up for second by half a length from Air Charm. Air Charm was alongside Sir Edwin before the race was half over. She beat the weakening Archway by a length and a half for third. The favourite. Underbid. was fifth. He disputed the lead for more than half the way, then trailed on the inside, but the strong finish that had characterised his earlier racing was absent this time Miss Halyard showed speed to finish sixth after a slow start. She was followed in by Buckles. Heathcliff, Fairy King. Brian Warwick. Keith's Luck, Waikiwi Star. Ballormia, Distant Day. Paraea, Tarras, The Tramp, and Orderly.
