SKIERS PROTEST AT RUAPEHU
Contract Termination For Instructor
(New Zeaiana Preet Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 19. Telegrams are to be sent to the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) and the leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) tomorrow, expressing the concern of North Island skiers at the termination of the contract of Mr Harvey Clifford, head of the ski school on Mount Ruapehu, and asking an immediate investigation. Mr Clifford’s contract with the Tourist Hotel Corporation was ended last week and it was announced that he intended to leave New Zealand within the next few days. -
An emergency meeting of the Ruapehu Mountain Clubs’ Association councillors was held on the mountain today and a telegram was drafted stating that “by terminating the contract of the world renowned ski instructor, Hanrey Clifford, the successful ski organisation built up over the last seven years is in danger of collapsing.” Telegrams are also to be sent to the chairman of Tongariro National Park Board, the National Ski Council, the general manager of the Tourist Department (Mr Marshall), and the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand, as well as several private persons.
