New Submarine Launched
(Rec. 8.20 p.m.) LONDON. July 18 The Duchess of Kent launched Britain’s latest submarine, the Oberon, first of a new class of the same name, at the Royal Naval dockyard in Chatham, Kent, today. The Oberon’s superstructure is almost entirely of moulded fibre-glass—the first time that plastic has been used in a Royal Naval submarine.
During the next two years, its behaviour in withstanding corrosion and heavy pressures will be studied to see whether it should be introduced as a standard feature.
