EXPLOSION ON SUN
Report By Soviet Scientists (Rec. 7.15 pjn.) LONDON. July 17 Soviet scientists have recorded an explosion of “unprecedented violence” on the surface of the sun. Moscow Radio reported today Astrophysicists at Kazakh observed a large group of spots on July 10, the broadcast said “In the eastern part of the central meridian of the sun. a huge explosion took place, which reached maximum brightness 11 minutes later,” the radio reported Having worked to a limited schedule yesterday due to auroral activity, Makara Radio, the principal wireless receiving centre for New Zealand, was again confined in its activity today, according to a Press Association message from Wellington. Sunspot interference caused many links to be out of commission at 9 23 a.m„ and all that were able to be worked this morning were the Australian radiophone circuit and the Australian press circuit which, however. was subject to some interference.
The T E.A.L. circuit on 20 megacycles could not be worked, and the links from Vancouver and San Francisco, through which messages are received and sent from London, were also disrupted.
Award to Gromyko.— The Soviet Foreign Minister (Mr Andrei Gromyko) has been awarded the Order of Lenin for his services to the Soviet State and in connexion with his fiftieth birthday, the official Soviet news agency, Tass. has reported.— Moscow, July 18.
