TRANSPORT APPLICATION REFUSED BY AUTHORITY

Exemption from the 30-mile rail restriction sought by J. Deyell and Company, Ltd., so that the firm could carry its own builders’ ■nd plasterers’ sand, pre-mix and washed shingle between Kaiapoi ■nd Little River was refused by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. A. Bretherton). Mr J. S. Heywood, for Deyells, said the company did not want its area extended or any additional class of goods added to its licence. There would be no financial gain to the firm as anything saved would be passed on to the users of the materials. He said there was only a three-days-a-week service on the Little River branch line and this was not good enough.

He said facilities .provided by • the railways were not good < enough. “There is only a shovel for loading at Kaiapoi and for unloading at Little River.” Mr Heywood said three days notice was needed to get a suitable railway waggon to Kaiapoi. Loading the waggon took a man 1} hours. Dawson Joseph Cunningham, manager of the firm, said the firm had carried materials by road to Banks Peninsula. “Contravening Regulations” “We thought we were within our rights, but we were told by the Transport Department that we were contravening the regulations.” He said that using road-rail-road to carry to Banks Peninsula would mean his firm would not be able to compete. To Mr L. C. Brown, for the Railways Department, Cunningham said if his firm was granted exemption from the restriction it would be prepared to carry to any part of Banks Peninsula.

Answering a question by Mr Brown, he said it would be

abhorrent for him- as a private enterprise contractor to borrow a front-end loader from the local C a °«n lat Wttle River t 0 unload a rail waggon. Mr Brown told the authority £f antm f 2£ the aPPiication would r;J, Urt^ er competition with the Little River branch line, ~ “ id ,and ’ P r e-mix and shingle were carried at one of the lowest rates on the railway tariff. Hunt «r, for the Banks Peninsula branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Bai d Wanting of the licence would put Banks Peninsula transport operators at a disadvantage. nU° r , "l. any years Banks Peninsula has got on all right with shingle from Birdling’s Flat” he said.

Mr Hunter submitted that on figures given by Cunningham the move suggested by the firm would be completely uneconomic” He said Cunningham had admitted that his firm did not look f°r profit on the cartage, but looked for profit coming in from its subsidiary company” which S?.?ol "" * •' Other Applications Automatic goods-service licences T f M ’ Gray, Hororata, and J.
