ADVENTURE IN OlL.—The picture on the left (from a book reviewed on this page) shows one of the most dramatic moments in the history of oil. During operations to put out a blazing well in Persia in 1951, an explosive charge fired at the Well-head freed half a mile of steel pipe in the well. The pipe is seen in twists and whirls as it shoots 2000 feet into the sky. Some may be seen still emerging from the hole. The size of the fire may be gauged from the buildings below. The picture on the right is a beautiful study of a drilling barge in the Persian Gulf, off the shores of the sheikdom of Abu Dhabi. The barge was built by a German concern and towed 6800 miles to the Persian Gulf. Maintained from a base at Das Island, the barge employs 50 men in continuous shifts. A fast service is provided by helicopter.
