ZOO’S EEL-FISHING CONTEST
Interest Embarrasses Officials “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, July 17. The recent announcement of an eel-fishing contest, to rid duck ponds at the Auckland zoo of the many eels which are slowly killing off ducks and water fowl, has embarrassed zoo officials. Children and adults have swamped the zoo with requests for information on the competition. There has even been an invasion by youngsters with rods of all descriptions and even proper eel pots. To control the fishing craze and reduce danger ,to the public, “rods, gaffs and similar barbaric implements” will be banned from the zoo except on official competition days, said the administrative director of city parks (Mr G. Dean).
The first of several contests for children will be staged on July 25. Bait will be provided free and prizes, including a "specially-made shield and gift tokens, will be offered for the biggest eel, the largest catch and other categories.
