FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING

Daffodils In Shop, W inflows

The expectant feeling that spring is not far away has been heightened by the sight of spring flowers in the windows of florists’ shops. However, the prices—10s a dozen for daffodils only, a short time ago—have helped any spring feeling the’’ casual shoppers may have. ’ A survey of Christchurch florists yesterday showed daffodils. golden narcissi, daphne, anemones, freesias, stock, peas, violets, cyclamen and Iceland poppies all on show but not in very great quantities. Golden narcissi or soleil d’or were the only locally grown narcissi on the market and prices had varied from 5s to 6s a dozen over the last week, said one florist. Small trumpet daffolds and cream daffodils from the North Island had been on sale in Christchurch for the last six to eight weeks and prices ranged from 10s down to about 5s a dozen. Locally-grown flowers were scarce, said the florist, indicating a partially-filled window. Local supplies would be late this season and it would be a further two months before they appeared in any quantity, he said.
