New Disease Of Carrots
An aphid-carried virus disease of carrots, identified as carrot mottley dwarf, had been found in New Zealand, and appeared to be widely distributed, according to the annual report of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Field trials carried out by the field crop section of the Plant Diseases Division at Lincoln had shown that the disease was responsible for serious reduction in yield and quantity of early carrots. Severe infection occurred at Lincoln only in early sown (September) carrots. In such earlysown crops good control of the virus was obtained by fortnightly spraying with methyl demeton (metasystox) from mid-October.
