Training For Golfers
Canterbury’s representatives in the New Zealand golf team to compete in the Commonwealth tournament in South Africa in October are not making quite the same energetic approach to the task in hand as the Auckland player, R. R. Newdick. Because he says he has been playing tournament golf and practising since February, almost without a break, Newdick will play only two rounds each weekend until August. But on two nights of the week he intends to carry out a physical training programme at an Auckland gymnasium. Weight training, he expects, will increase his stamina as well as keep him fit Charles' Recipe R. J. Charles, however, feels there is nothing better for golf training than golf. At present he is able to play at week-ends, but as the days become a little longer he hopes to practise for about an hour on each of two evenings each week. Towards October, therefore, he will be able to get in much more golf than is possible at present. R. C. Murray’s programme has been somewhat similar, but he is on holiday at present, and that probably means he will be working hard on his golf.
