Young N.Z. Wrestlers

The selection of four Canterbury amateur wrestlers, Maurie McNam, Bryn Roberts, Bryce Hadcroft and Peter Moore, in the New Zealand amateur wrestling team to tour Australia next month will come as no surprise to local followers of the sport, who have watched these lads since they first came into prominence as schoolboy champions. But it will surprise many wrestling supporters in other parts of New Zealand, because none of these boys has ever .won a New Zealand championship. They attended the trials and after gruelling elimination contests in which many title-holders fell by the wayside, these boys gained selection. Coaching All four of them are previous holders of Canterbury schoolboy championships; more than that, the four all belong to the one gymnasium—Toe H Linwood Boys’ Club where, apart frotn their normal training, they assist the coach (Mr W. Straw) in teaching the large number of young aspiring amateur champions. Roberts, McNam and Hadcroft were all pupils of the Christchurch West High School—not only pupils, but classmates for all their high school days.
