DE GAULLE IN ITALY
Five-Day State Visit Begins
(Rec. 10 p.m.) MILAN, June 24. President Charles de Gaulle landed in Milan yesterday in a French jet airliner to begin a five-day State visit to Italy—his first outside the French community since he took office as first President of the Fifth Republic last January. An Italian fighter escort took up position as the President’s plane soared into Italy over the Alps and a salute of 101 guns boomed out as the twin-jet Caravelle landed
General de Gaulle, accompanied by Mrs de Gaulle, was greeted by the Italian President, Mr Giovanni Gronchi. Also with the general were his Foreign Minister. Mr Maui ve Couve de Murville, and the Armed Forces Minister Mr Pierre Guillaumat. General de Gaulle will go on to Rome by rail today, for a round of official engagements, including political and economic talks with Italian leaders, and an audience with Pope John on Saturday. He said that his visit and his talks with Italian leaders would be of considerable consequence for Europe and the world.
