ROAD COURTESY CRUSADE
Plans For Campaign In City
A “courtesy crusade” will be conducted in Christchurch next month, with the aim of instilling road courtesy into every road user—pedestrian, cyclist', or motorist.
It is hoped that the crusade, which will be organised by the Christchurch City Council traffic department, the Transport Department, and the Christchurch Road Safety Committee, will grow into a New Zealand-wide road safety campaign. Means of publicising the crusade were discussed when the Christchurch Road Safety Committee met last evening. The crusade would be a goodhumoured, rather than a grim, affair, members agreed. Caricature and cartoon would figure prominently in publicity material. The crusade will be officially opened by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) on July 27, at a ceremony at the City Council Chambers, which may be rebroadcast.
The City Council traffic department, the Transport Department, the Road Safety Committee, the Automobile Association, and the Chamber of Commerce will issue messages in support of the campaign. Other publicity media suggested were: Bumper-bar stickers on cars, and posters on buses. Safety slogans in magazines, entertainment programmes, and race books. Messages broadcast over public-address systems at football matches and race meetings. Messages shown on picture theatre screens.
Shop window displays. Radio interviews and programmes. Newspaper and radio news.
