Bus Services
Sir, —Up to a few weeks ago, owing to the Memorial avenue road works, the usual route from the airport followed a detour round Avonhcad and Waimairi roads. This service gave great satisfaction to those living in the many new homes in this area and is greatly missed now that the buses operate straight down Memorial avenue. Indeed, the popularity of the school bus, which still follows the back streets, is evidence 'of the need for a bus service here. I suggest that it might be practicable for Midland Motors to re-route the morning and the afternoon bus so that shoppers with young
children might more conveniently make use of this excellent service.—Yours, etc., NORTH AVONHEAD RESIDENT.
June 19, 1959. [The manager of Midland Motorways Services, Ltd. (Mr J. J. B. Connor), said that the company was concerned that people living along the deviation would miss the service when it returned to its normal route on Memorial avenue, and had given serious thought to the possibility of continuing to run some trips along Avonhead road. The service was designed to cater for people travelling to and from the airport and along Memorial avenue, and the company concluded that the maximum service required running along the most direct route. They continued, however, to run a bus along Avonhead road for school children. Avonhead road was some 250 to 270 yards from Memorial avenue by a path across Burnside Park and they had already applied to move a bus stop to the Memorial avenue end of the park. The company appreciated the writer’s courteous reference to their service, and they regretted that they were unable to help as things stood at present.]
