FARM FORUM Rimtion,—.nd by ..pert,—for the men on the land. I ' I II ST- fl hhhHHI ' y I HHhHk Full spraying programmes can be maintained all year round. Spraying Oils for Orchards Q : What are the latest methods used for the control of aphis, scale and red mite in orchards? A: Shell have a range of five spraying oils which, if used according to a careful programme, should give good control of these pests. Shell Redspray is a fully dormant oil. Shell Winterspray is also a dormant oil but is pre-emulsified for use in hard water areas. Shell Palespray is a semi-dormant oil for use at a later stage than Shell Redspray or Shell Winterspray. It should not be applied after green tip. Shell Late Winter Oil is also a semi-dormant oil but it can be used right up to tight cluster. Shell Whitespray is a summer oil used at the full foliage stage. It can be seen from this range of products that a full spraying oil programme can be maintained the year round with a suitable Shell product. Cricket Plagues 9= If the crickets strike again this year has Shell got something which will put an early end to them? There are cases on record of a farmer who ground sprayed with Dieldrex 15 and he stated afterwards that within twenty-four hours there was not a live cricket in the area. Dead cricket counts on a trial of 150 acres were as high as 28 insects per square foot. Aldrex 2 and Dieldrex 15 are Shell formulations of aldrin and dieldrin and are fully equal to any cricket plague. Last year many thousands of acres were sprayed with Dieldrex 15 or Aldrex 2. Dieldrin superphosphate may also be used. Growing Winter Feed on Old Pasture ? ! I've a hill ploughed up this year out of pasture probably 50 years old. What is the best crop for winter feeding to be grown and what is the best manure to use? A: This question comes from South Otago. For winter feed in your district swedes and chou moullier should provide the greatest bulk of feed. If you preferred you could sow this either in breaks of each or as a mixture. A ton of lime should be applied on the worked ground prior to sowing and again sow 3 cwt. of the above mixture. Be sure to sow the crop on time. Low Cost Barley Grass Control 9= Is there a Shell Weedkiller suitable for low cost control of barley grass? A: Tne Shell Agricultural Division include in their range the Weedkiller Dowpon for controlling barley grass and other unwanted grasses. Based on Dalapon, Dowpon is most effective as a foliage spray although it can be absorbed through the plants roots. /KhbllA “Farm Forum” is another Shell service to farmers.
