Cambridge Men “Dismayed”
New Zealanders on the staff of the University of Cambridge have expressed their concern at proposals to establish new universities at Hamilton and Palmerston North. In a letter to the editor of “The Press” they say:— “We, the undersigned, being graduates of the University of New Zealand who are now fellows of colleges or university teaching officers in the University of Cambridge, wish to place on record our dismay at the Government’s proposal to establish new universities at Hamilton and at Palmerston North. “The main outlines of the case against the proposal have already been indicated in your columns by the New Zealand University graduates on the staff of the University of Manchester. We associate ourselves with what they have said, and urge all who have the interests of the New Zealand Universities at heart to bring every possible pressure to bear upon the Government to reconsider its decision.”
The letter is signed by J. F. Bennett, C. A. Blyth, M. R. Fisher, L. H. G. Greenwood, M. R. Head, I. S. Laurie, and J. M. Ziman.
