CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK
Big Exhibition In Christchurch
Children’s Book Week will be held throughout New Zealand this year from August 24 to 28. The Christchurch committee, however, plans to open a children's book exhibition in Amuri Motors showroom, which has again been made available for this purpose on the evening of August 18 and it will continue until August 29. This has been planned so that teachers may bring classes of children during the last week of the term.
The committee, with Mr F. Price as chairman, is widely representative. Members are: Mr F. Price (New Zealand Educational Institute), Mr S. Gower (Headmasters’ Association), Mrs L. J. Broomfield (Parent - Teachers’ Federation), Mrs A. F. Johnson (Kindergarten Association), Mrs L. Amos (Catholic Women’s League), Mrs R. Eagle (National Council of Churches), Miss M. Simpson (teacher inspectorate), Miss N. Westbury (broadcasting), Miss M. Hall, Miss J. McLaughlin, Miss M. Haddon-Jones (New Zealand Library Association), Mr R. K. Milne (Education Board), Mr A. Johnston, Miss Hodgkinson, Mr Tiptitski, and Mr P. Stewart (Booksellers’ Association). The official book week slogan ‘‘new world through books” will be incorporated in the features of the exhibition.
In view of the success of last year's ventures in Ashburton and Westport, it is proposed to send displays to Waimate and Westport after the exhibition finishes in Christchurch.
A significant feature of Christchurch book week, which is the most ambitiously-designed of any in New Zealand, is the co-opera-tion and help the committee receives from different sections of the community.
