RACIAL RIOTS IN SOUTH AFRICA.—Police making a baton charge to disperse African women demonstrators in Durban’s non-white settlement, Cato Manor, on June 18. About 3000 women, many armed with sticks, refused to leave a native beer halt They stoned policemen, and, with the help of African men, resisted a baton charge. The police charged again, and then opened fire with rifles guns. According to a police report, three Africans were killed and 27 treated in hospital for bullet wounds. One policeman was shot in the back during the clash, and two others were injured.
