Two more Italian liners have been diverted from Fremantle and are now sailing direct to Melbourne.
They are the 12,840-ton Lloyd Triestino liner Australia, and the Cogedar Line’s 8775-ton Flaminia.
The two ships are by-passing Fremantle so that if they are held up by the world-wide strike of Italian seamen they will be tied up in Melbourne. Most of the passengers have booked to the eastern states.
A third Italian ship, the Sydney, owned by Flotta Lauro, has already by-passed Fremantle and is due in Melbourne tomorrow. It will join the strike-bound Neptur.ia and Toscana there.
The Australia, a sister ship to the Neptunia. is due on Saturday. Eighty-four passengers will be sent back to Perth and 45 to Adelaide. Three hundred and thirty-one passengers will disembark
The Flaminia, with 1000 Greek and Italian migrants on board is expected next Monday. Fortysix passengers who were stranded on the Neptunia in Melbourne for 13 days left Sydney by two aeroplanes today for Rome. Another 50 will be flown to Sydney on the way to Rome, later this week. The ship’s owners, Lloyd Triestino, are paying the Increased costs which are about double the shipping fares.
