SEA CADETS INSPECTED
Visit By Director Of Reserves
The Naval Board's annual recognition inspection of the Canterbury Sea Cadet Division was- made at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus lasV evening by the director of reserves and mobilisation (Commander Keay).
The Naval Board recognises sea cadet units and supplies them with uniforms, instructors, training equipment and annual training courses. ' It also commissions the officers.
This recognition is renewed annually if, on inspection, the unit is found to have maintained the required standard. Commander Keay last evening congratulated the Canterbury sea cadets on their bearing and on the way they were turned out. “They are as smart as the volunteer reserve division,” he said.
He was proud of the fact that they were sea cadets, he told the parade after he had inspected them and watched them training.
“I hope you will eventually join the Navy,” said Commander Keay. ‘‘But even if you don’t, no boy can join a sea cadet unit and serve in it and not be a better boy for it.” He reminded them that some would be selected for the Empire Training Course at the naval training establishment. H.M.N.Z.S. Tamaki, on Motuihi Island in the Hauraki Gulf.
He said he was pleased to see that the majority of the sea cadets in the division were pupils of secondary schools. There were 62 boys ih the parade, including a platoon of new recruits. Today Commander Keay will inspect sea cadets at Redcliffs.
