STEWART ISLAND SERVICE
Residents Dissatisfied With Arrangements
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. June 21. Stewart Islanders feel that the Westport Harbour Board's tug, James O’Brien, chosen to take i over from the Wairua on the Foveaux Strait service at the end of this month, is unsuitable for the run. The Government has ordered a replacement steamer for the Wairua. but it will be some time before she is ready for the service. The James O’Brien was used on the run in 1954. The islanders are reported to be dissatisfied with the tug’s cargo capacity. They say the tug cannot carry the weekly shipments of coal and other heavy bulky items, as well as perishable goods and those requiring protective storage because the vessel virtually has no cargo space and only limited accommodation. The islanders propose holding a meeting at Halfmoon Bay tomorrow night to discuss the question.
