EXPLOSION AT MERCER
Boiler Badly Damaged
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 21. A complete inspection has shown that the explosion in a boiler at the Mercer steam station last Wednesday caused serious damage, said Mr H. E. Evans, district engineer for the Electricity Department, tonight. The boiler would be out of action for some months, he said. The explosion occurred in the most recently commissioned of the three boilers at present operating at Mercer. It reduced output from 90,000 kilowatts to 60,000 kilowatts. It was the second explosion to put a boiler out of action since the station was commissioned in July last year. A new boiler, the fourth, will have its initial tests this week. It may begin producing power early in July. The fifth and sixth boilers are due in August and October.
