Table Tennis Town Beats Country By 60 Matches To 12

The Town table tennis team beat Country by 65 matches to 12. when the annual fixture was played at Eiftelton on Saturday evening. Town showed an all-round superiority. winning the senior events by 40 matches to 8, and the junior events (which were being held for the first time) by 25 matches to 4. The contest was capably conducted by the Mid-Canterbury sub-association on behalf of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association.

The best of the Country players was Miss B. Taylor, the present holder of the sub-association's singles title. Miss Taylor beat Miss D. Donald (Town) in a very long match, which went to 28-26 in the third game. Miss Taylor showed herself to be much steadier than previously, although Miss Donald, who is ranked tenth in the Dominion. was taking more risks than usual. Miss Taylor also beat the Town second player, Miss C. Lee. Miss M. Mac Kay (Mid-Canterbury) also won her two singles matches, beating Miss C. Halliday and Mrs I. Franks Miss Taylor and Miss MacKay won the top women’s doubles to complete a very successful evening. Mrs N. Skilling won the other women’s singles match for Country, to give Country five of the 16 women’s singles. Town was too strong in the men’s events, although several close matches were seen. I. Jones troubled K. Stevenson with his open game, and the Town player won only 22-20 in the third game. F. Drewitt. A. Swanson, and A. N. Chamberlain also showed good form in the Country’s men’s team.

The Country players showed good form also in the junior events, with D. Benson and B. Watkins beating R. Sanford and D. Lee respectively. The Country team was without its top boy, A. N.
