Soccer CANTERBURY BEATS OTAGO, 5-3, FOR JONES CUP

A fast and interesting match for the Jones Cup was won by Canterbury against Otago at English Park on Saturday. The final score, 5-3, was an accurate indication of the merits of the teams. Canterbury’s success was a result of good teamwork, each player doing his best in a welltrained side.

Otago's combination was not so j impressive, and forward move- l ments were mainly a result of ' individual efforts. ! With ideal weather and a good j playing surface the ball was con- ! stantly on the move in a match ' which produced soccer of a high standard. Territorially, play was fairly even, with Canterbury having a slight advantage, especially in the first spell, mainly because of good constructive play by its midfield players. Otago improved in the second half and closer marking curtailed many [promising moves by the Canterbury forwards. Always reliable, J. Callaghan played well in goal for Canterbury. The outstanding defensive player on the field was A. Laffey, the centrehalf. Laffey’s fine positional play and keen anticipation proved a constant block to the Otago forwards. M. Shardlow and I. Graham were hard-working full-backs who made few mistakes. - . Fine Midfield Play Much of Canterbury’s success stemmed from excellent midfield play. The wing halves, W. Rodger and’ H. Taylor, defended well and used the ball intelligently on attack. Covering a lot of ground and constantly probing the Otago defence with fast, accurate passes, the inside forwards, P. Feenstra and P. Repnell, played a major part in Canterbury’s victory. Canterbury’s wings, C. Steele and D. Worthington, each scored two goals and always looked formidable in possession. At centre-forward A. van Rooyen was shadow marked throughout by W. Driehus, and could make little progress. B. Davidson, the Otago goalkeeper, was generally sound, although his positioning was occasionally at fault. Driehus effortlessly cancelled van Rooyen, but an over-emphasised adherence to this task left him no chance to cover up for the full-backs. At leftback in the first spell and rightback in the second. A. Young plaved solidly throughout. The wing-halves, D. Downie and P. MacFarlane, did some things well but did not show up as much as I expected. J. Price played hard at inside right, making some good openings for his wing, W. Flaws. Flaws improved as the game progressed and sent in some accurate centres. On the left flank W. Samson received fewer opportunities, although this was mainly because

of disappointing play by the experienced inside left, G. Cuthill. The most formidable of the Otago attackers was the centre-forward. G. Little, who moved the ball smartly and sent in some powerful shots. The Play Canterbury kicked off and immediately went on attack, but Otago defended well. The first score came after 15 minutes of even play Rennell took a good cross from Steele, found his way blocked, and slipped a neat pass to Feenstra. who put a low shot into the net from close in. MacFarlane initiated counter-attacks for Otago, and it was Canterbury's turn on the defensive. Little took a penalty but shot wide of the goal. Otago’s efforts were rewarded when Little headed a good centre from Flaws into the net.

Back on defence, Feenstra put a long pass out to Steele, who made ground and centred strongly. Rennell let the ball run through to Worthington, who put a hard drive past Davidson.. From another centre by Steele Feenstra tricked two defenders and back-passed from the goal line to Worthington, who ran in to score with a strong shot. Two minutes later, in a concerted Canterbury attack. Rennell passed to Worthington, who headed the ball on to Steele. Steele’s hard drive from close range gave Davidson no chance. At half-time Canterbury led 4-1.

After two minutes’ play in the second spell Price secured a loose ball and put a strong high drive into the top of the net. Otago was combining better than in the first spell and shots from Little and Flaws hit the', posts. Steele increased Canterbury's lead when he received from broken play in mid-field and beat Davidson with a long, high shot. Seven minutes before the final whistle Little gained possession from a melee and shot a hard drive into the net from close range. Mr C. Anderson was referee.
