Parliamentary Salaries
Sir, —I agree with Mr Holloway on the subject of Parliamentary salaries. Men in the political field are learned, therefore deserve salaries and allowances in keeping with the responsibility they carry. I do not mean an increase like the Australian parties gave their Federal members. but a substantial increase which will not stop young men from entering politics. Politicians are abused by the public (myself included) when they overstep the mark, but we have to be governed. On present salaries, older men are in the majority in the House. Although knowledgeable, they are staid in their ideas, whereas the younger men have their lives ahead of them, and have progressive ideals. I think £2OOO would not be too much. Compared with Australian salaries it is reasonable. Yours, etc., N.F.G. June 19, 1959.
