Effect Of Atomic Warfare
WASHINGTON, June 19. A Congressional sub-committee will hold hearings next week to find the precise effects of a nuclear war involving the United States. The hearing was announced by the chairman of the Senate radiation sub-committee, Mr Chet Holifield, Democrat member of the House of Representatives. He displayed charts at a press conference showing the probable results of what he called a “limited’’ nuclear attack on 224 United States targets by 260 atomic weapons.
Mr Holifield pointed to one chart showing that two days after the attack practically the entire eastern half of the United States would be subject to greater or lesser amounts of radiation. He said six out of every 10 Americans lived within target range of sub-marine-launched nuclear missiles.
