SECOND TEST BEGINS

India 168, England 50 For Three

LONDON, June 18. A courageous innings of 81 by N. Contractor, India's left-handed opening batsman, who batted for more than four hours with a cracked rib, helped India total 168 in their first innings on the opening day of the second test against England at Lord’s today Contractor nad the rib cracked by a sharply rising ball from the England pace bowler J. B. Statham at the start of the innings, but in spite of the pain he hit one 6 and nine 4’s in a stay of 255 minutes. In a day in which bowlers otherwise took the honours, India came well back into the game by dismissing three England batsmen for 50 runs before the close of play. T. Greenhough the 27-year-old Lancashire leg-spinner, emerged from India’s innings with the outstanding analysis of five for 35 off 16 overs. He actually took all his wickets in the course of 31 deliveries, off which 12 runs were scored. Scores
