HOPE GIBBONS SHIELD
Teams Selected
The following teams have been selected by the three local amateur clubs to take part in the Hope Gibbons shield race for teams next Saturday on the Papanui club s course.
Papanui.—A team, N. Cowles, B. Shephard. H. Bush, C. Hibberd, K. Taylor, (res) W. Smith. B team, K Dwyer. K. Jones, W. Thorpe, R. E. Bush, W. Smith, (res) V. Lili. Avon.—R. Fowler, J. Beere, P. Wood. T. Kenny, B. Lang, (res) G. Painter.
Christchurch.—M. Newman, B. A’Court, *P. Hughes, J. De Graaf, J. Swanston, (res.) G. Shepherd. Each club has fielded a strong team and the winner will go to Levin to take part in the National Hope Gibbons event. The Papanui B team is the same as that which won the Grant Cup for junior teams a week ago, except that W Smith replaces V. Lili. This is a very strong team and it might do better than the A team.
The Avon team will ride very hard. Their form this season indicates there is little likelihood of them breaking up. The team should be the hardest to beat. Christchurch has a very formidable team and the inclusion of the brilliant junior rider, J. Swanston, will strengthen it. The Timaru club will field a team, but it is unlikely that it will have the strength to beat the local teams.,
