APPEAL BY RED CROSS

More Than £3500 Raised

A total of at least £3500 had been raised in the Red Cross Society’s appeal in Christchurch when counting finished at 9 p.m. yesterday. Of this total. £l5OO was collected in the street appeal, £BOO was given in other donations, and £1236 10s— a record—was raised at a market in the Durham Street Methodist Church hall

Between 350 and 400 collectors, working ip shifts, took part in the street appeal, and at the market representatives from about 60 outlying Red Cross branches assisted in the sale of produce. The greatest demand at the market was for meat, of which £ 165 worth was sold. Cooked foods and cakes realised £157. Persons keen on brightening the home with flowers spent £B2 and the Junior Red Cross raised £62 The final total for the day would not be known until Monday, said the chairman of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society (Mr A. E. Kincaid) last evening.
