TELEPHONES IN SUMNER
More Connexions In November
All residents of Sumner who are now on the waiting list for telephones will have them by November, when the Post and Telegraph Department expects to have completed laying cables and the new exchange extension is ready. While the department is working on the Sumner area it will also connect up a smpll number of prospective subscribers who are waiting in Lyttelton. Another major project which the department hopes to have completed early next year Is the re-cabling of the Ferry road area. Tenders have been called for the final 50,000 ft of cable for that work.
The Ferry road area Is the final remaining sector to be recabled in the central exchange area. The re-cabling of the central exchange area was begun in 1953 and the whole work is expected to be finished early next year. By that time approximately 500 waiting applicants for telephones will have been connected in the Ferry road district.
Ferry road was begun early this year when additional main duct Cables were pulled in. The 50,000 ft of cable for which tenders have now been called is for the side streets off Ferry road between Fitzgerald avenue and Radley street.
